44 Stars for the Mower, 0 for Greenworks
By ChloKins
Original Review "Was Hoping for 5 Stars"
After trying a different brand of corded mower, I decided I LOVED the quietness of the electric mower, but HATED the cord, even on my tiny 4000sqft yard. I really wanted a battery-powered mower, so after lots of research, I decided that lithium was the way to go so I bought the Greenworks 40-Volt Lithium Ion 19" Mower. I got a combo set that included the 19" mower, the string trimmer, leaf blower, battery and charger for $500.

The positives: O-M-HECK! It was AMAZING, right out of the box! The only thing I had to assemble was the handle, and that only consisted of unfolding it and tightening a couple of bolts. Simple! The instruction manual was simple to read and tells you right up front that the mower is equipped with a "soft start" feature, which means that when you turn it on, it takes about 3 seconds to rev up to full power. I thought it only took 1-2 seconds, but whatever. :-) I thought that the noise level was really pretty quiet. You could practically be talking on the phone while you were mowing the grass! I would compare it to the noise level of a quieter vacuum. The one-handed 7-position cutting height adjuster lever is very convenient.

The 19" cutting path is the perfect size for a smaller yard: Big enough to not take forever to cut the lawn, but small enough that it doesn't take up a ton of space in the garage/shed. It has been my experience with other mowers (gas and electric) where the grass catcher bag is mounted too steeply, so much that the grass isn't able to actually be collected, but rather it sits there at the entrance to the bag until it clogs up the unit. The angle of the bag on the Greenworks is perfect for the cut grass to shoot right into it. More grass collection = less interruptions to empty the bag. There is no self-propelled feature on this model, but since it's so lightweight, it was not a concern, even on the fairly steep, grassy incline in my front yard. When I say "lightweight", I don't mean cheap. This machine feels like it's a solid machine, but just doesn't weigh much for a lawnmower.

I will agree with a previous reviewer that said a spare key should be included. Guard that key with your life - who knows how much a replacement will cost...

The battery took less than 3 hours to fully charge. (I'm not exactly sure how long because I plugged it in and came back 2hrs 45mins later and it was fully charged.) I mowed my entire yard which took about 45 minutes and I still had 3/5 battery bars left. Impressive battery life!

Now, for the negative: I only got to use this fabulous mower 1 ½ times before it died. I don't know what's wrong. I got the mower on a Monday and I mowed the entire yard with absolutely no issues. Five days later (Saturday), I mowed the front yard with no issues then took it around to the back and it just wouldn't start. I tried the battery with my Greenworks string trimmer and the battery works fine. I swapped out the battery, nothing. I checked for clogs under the mower deck, clean. I took the key in & out, nothing. The grab-bar still has lots of tension, so I know it's not that. I tried everything in the "Troubleshooting" section of the manual. There are no user-serviceable parts on the mower, so if it's a fuse or something, I can't get to it without potentially voiding my warranty. I have already made 3 calls to customer service and still am nowhere. If I can get this resolved, my rating of the product will go up. I was really looking forward to a great product. I'm hoping this issue is just a fluke and that once it's fixed, the mower will last me 10 years.

UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REVIEW: After spending literally HOURS on the phone with the Greenworks Customer Service department with them giving me suggestions that were totally bunk and made-up, I was given the name of an "authorized" repair shop. When I called the shop, they were working 6-8 weeks out. That defeats the purpose of having just bought a mower for the summer. Greenworks told me that I could send it back to them, at my own expense. I decided that I would take the machine apart, even if I voided the "warranty", (since I was going to pay to send back a broken mower anyway) and see what I could find. I carefully removed the six little screws that hold the top cover on and looked inside. Expecting a mass of confusion, I found a tiny little engine and a few wires. What do you know??? I saw a wire with a plug that was just flapping around and a receptor that should have had a wire plugged in to it. 1+1 = A working lawnmower!!! The plug was snug, so I'm guessing that when the mower was originally built/assembled at the factory, that tiny little plug was never fully engaged, so with shipping and the 1-1/2 times I used it, it jogged fully loose. What a SIMPLE fix! I have used the mower probably more than 20 times since that day with absolutely NO problems.

I give the mower itself a 4-star rating (would have earned a 5 if I wouldn't have had to fix it myself). The Greenworks Customer Service, joke of a "warranty", and shady business practices, on the other hand all earn ZERO stars. The situation was all completely unacceptable. It's your choice if you want to risk buying this mower. I might suggest calling the toll-free number to see 1) How long you have to sit on hold, and 2) Ask where your local "authorized" repair shop is...you might end up having to drive 100 miles just to get your mower fixed under warranty. That might make a difference in your choice.

3Good mower - Lousy customer service/warranty issue resolution
By saralee45
I received this mower yesterday and it worked great right out of the box. I would have given this item a 5-star rating, except that when the first battery pack ran down its charge, and I followed the directions to re-charge it, the battery pack failed and would no longer power the mower. After calling customer service and stating that I could not tell if the issue was actually a battery pack or the charger unit itself , I was told I would have to take the battery to a repair shop either more than 100 miles away, or over the bridge to Canada. This is a BRAND NEW UNIT, neither a refurbished one, nor a failure after months/years of use ! Customer service after purchase of a product as expensive as this one is part and parcel of my satisfaction/dissatisfaction with the item.

5Surprisinly easy to use
By J. Tan
After using gasoline mower for past 10 years, I've decided to jump on the 2nd generation Greenworks 40 volt 4 amp 19inch lawn mower. After a few uses and a couple charges, I'm really glad I made this purchase!

Good:
*Weight not as heavy as I thought, easy to maneuver on my 0.3 acre lawn with downward slopes near the end of property.
*It does really provide constant grass cutting power from fully charge to end of charge.
*It comes with 2 batteries.
*A lot quieter than the gasoline engine.
*No more engine oil maintenance.
*Metal mowing round shell with plastic upper around the battery compartment. Some other electric mowers have full plastic shell.
*Easy bendable frames for storage.
*4 year warranty on mower & 2 year warranty on Lithium Ion battery.

Bad:
*The edge of cutting blade is not as strong, it has a few minor blade edge nicks after 5 times of mowing.
*The rear grass bag does not hold as much grass, would be better if it is a little bigger.
